AI Is Approaching Its First Peak—Not Its Destination.Tim Draper’s perspective on the technology curve, AI infrastructure, and the next era of innovation

SaniMed Science Group recently participated in Founder Institute’s global Venture Trailblazers event featuring Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper. The online session, hosted by Adeo Ressi, Founder of Founder Institute, brought together more than 1,000 founders, investors, and innovators from around the world.



Jim Wu, Founder and CEO of SaniMed Science Group and Chairman of BioTech Shanghai, participated as a graduate of Founder Institute’s second MedTech cohort. The discussion offered a valuable perspective on how major technologies evolve—and where artificial intelligence may stand today.



A technology revolution does not grow in a straight line



One of the most memorable moments of the session was Tim Draper’s simple hand-drawn curve illustrating the development of a transformative technology.


The curve was not a traditional market-growth chart or a standard technology hype cycle. Instead, it described how a new technological era may develop through two major periods of acceleration.


The first stage is the 0-to-1 breakthrough. A technology moves rapidly from concept to reality, proves that it can work, and captures the attention of entrepreneurs, investors, companies, and the public.


According to Draper, AI is now approaching the peak of this first 0-to-1 stage.


Large language models, generative AI, AI agents, and rapidly improving automation tools have demonstrated the technology’s potential. AI has already changed how people create content, analyze information, develop software, conduct research, and interact with digital systems.


However, this does not mean that the AI revolution is nearing completion.


It may mean that the first chapter is only now reaching its initial milestone.



The quieter stage may be the most important


After the first steep rise, Draper’s curve enters a longer and relatively flatter period. This stage may appear less dramatic, but it is where the foundations of the next technological era are built.


For AI, that foundation includes:

· Computing capacity and advanced semiconductors

· Energy supply and data-center infrastructure

· Enterprise integration and workflow redesign

· Robotics and autonomous systems

· AI governance, regulation, and security

· Industry-specific applications in healthcare, education, manufacturing, finance, and other sectors


This period will require more than technological progress. It will also require new business models, regulatory frameworks, professional standards, infrastructure investment, and widespread user adoption.


In healthcare and life sciences, the process may be particularly complex. AI must move beyond impressive demonstrations and become reliable, clinically relevant, secure, interoperable, and economically sustainable. It must fit into real clinical and research workflows while meeting demanding regulatory and ethical requirements.


That work may be less visible than the launch of a new AI model, but it is what will determine whether AI becomes a lasting part of healthcare delivery, drug development, diagnostics, medical devices, education, and preventive medicine.



The second acceleration: when AI becomes infrastructure


Draper’s curve suggests that a second and much larger acceleration may occur after the necessary infrastructure has been established.


At that point, AI would no longer be viewed as a standalone technology sector. It would become a basic capability embedded across nearly every industry, similar to the role the internet plays today.


Companies would no longer ask whether they should adopt AI. The more relevant question would be how effectively AI is integrated into their operations, products, services, and decision-making.


In healthcare, this could mean AI becoming routinely embedded in:

· Drug discovery and translational research

· Clinical-trial design and patient recruitment

· Medical imaging and pathology

· Precision medicine and biomarker development

· Remote monitoring and preventive care

· Hospital operations and clinical decision support

· Medical education and personalized training


The second acceleration would therefore represent more than broader adoption. It would mark the transition from AI as an emerging tool to AI as essential infrastructure.



Space technology may be even earlier on the curve


Draper also discussed space technology as another potentially transformative field, but one that may be positioned earlier on the same type of development curve.


The investment opportunity is not limited to rockets or launch systems. The journey toward the Moon, Mars, and a broader space economy will require innovation in advanced materials, energy, communications, robotics, autonomous systems, manufacturing, life-support technologies, and medicine.


Many of those technologies may ultimately have significant applications on Earth.

The same pattern has occurred in previous periods of technological development: innovations created to solve extreme technical challenges often become platforms for broader commercial and societal transformation.

For SaniMed Science Group, Draper’s curve offers a useful framework for understanding investment and commercialization opportunities across AI, biotechnology, medical technology, and cross-border innovation.


The key question is not simply whether a technology is attracting attention today. It is whether that technology is approaching a meaningful inflection point—and whether the infrastructure, market conditions, regulatory environment, and commercial ecosystem are developing around it.


AI may be approaching the first peak of its 0-to-1 phase, but the larger transformation may still lie ahead.


Sometimes, a simple sketch says more than a hundred slides. Draper’s curve was not only a description of AI’s development. It was also a reminder that the most significant opportunities often emerge before a new technological era becomes obvious to everyone.


The biggest opportunities are rarely found after everyone believes in a technology. They are found just before the next era begins.


The most exciting part of the AI revolution may therefore be not how far the industry has already progressed, but how much of the journey still remains.
