JPM Week First Experience
Attending the JPM conference for the first time in January 2024 (full name: JP Morgan Healthcare Conference / JPM Week), even as a seasoned attendee of international biopharma conferences, left me bewildered for quite a while. With so many meetings, forums, breakfasts, luncheons, and dinners, as well as so many organizing institutions—BIO, Fierce, RESI, BFC—and so many universities—Harvard, Stanford, Peking University, Tsinghua, Union Hospital—and so many entrepreneurial, investment, and incubation institutions from countries like France, South Korea, Japan, and China, it’s truly overwhelming! After nearly a year of research, I finally understood JPM Week! Due to its complexity, I will likely write a series of articles to explain it. But to sum it up in two sentences: it is neither a conference nor an exhibition, but rather a “grand gathering” of the global biopharma tech world. The main venue of JP Morgan doesn’t sell tickets and only invites insiders—companies that are not big enough or whose bosses don’t have enough funds can’t get in! Other booths are also invitation-only or ticketed, some are “members-only” or “customer-only,” and some tickets sell out instantly. The happiest places seem to be the luxury hotels, restaurants, and conference centers in downtown San Francisco, which are especially expensive and impossible to book last minute! When you see participants in suits and ties sitting on the floor of a luxurious 5-star hotel lobby, you can’t help but smile knowingly!
